Overview
This role owns the accounting operations that support a faith-based nonprofit media ministry’s financial close, controls, audit, and financial reporting. The Controller provides technical leadership to ensure financial statements under U.S. GAAP for not-for-profits are accurate, timely, and built to last.
Location offers Colorado Springs, CO or Remote (U.S.). Full-time; Exempt.
Responsibilities
- Own the close: Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close; deliver reviewed financial statements under U.S. GAAP for not-for-profits (ASC 958) on an agreed timeline, including variance explanations.
- Steward the ledger: Own the general ledger, chart of accounts, net asset classification, and functional expense allocation methodology.
- Lead reporting and budgeting: Produce reporting packages for the CFO, executive team, and Board Finance/Audit Committee; lead the annual budget process and budget-to-actual reporting.
- Own technical accounting: Handle contributions, grants, royalties, and rebates, including conditional vs. unconditional determinations; research complex or novel transactions and provide well-supported recommendations.
- Maintain donor and financial data alignment: Maintain reconciliation between the donor CRM and the general ledger; manage project-level accounting so spend is reported against the Pillar it serves.
- Lead the audit: Serve as primary auditor contact for the annual external audit; evaluate and respond to proposed adjustments.
- Design and enforce financial reporting controls: Build and enforce internal controls over financial reporting, including segregation of duties, banking access, payment approvals, and fraud prevention.
- Own compliance areas: Maintain charitable solicitation, state tax, and multi-state registrations; monitor unrelated business income.
- Authorize payroll: Serve as final authorization point for each payroll cycle by reviewing the register prepared by People & Culture, resolving exceptions, and releasing payroll (authorize, not prepare).
- Oversee accounts payable and contractors: Own accounts payable, expense reimbursement, corporate cards, the vendor master file, and contractor payments, including 1099 reporting.
- Lead and develop the accounting team: Coach the accounting team, build cross-training, and serve as the CFO’s primary backup during absences.
- Modernize financial operations: Own the financial systems environment and lead automation—including AI-enabled tools—to reduce manual reconciliation and control risk.
