Overview

This role is a development hire focused on growth into broader strategic and firm leadership responsibilities over time. The employer is seeking a US Tax & Accounting leader (title may be subject to discussion during calibration) to prepare and review standard US tax returns, manage client relationships, support tax compliance, perform accounting-related work using QuickBooks, and train junior staff.

The position supports clients throughout the United States and requires working US Eastern-aligned hours.

Responsibilities

Tax Services

  • Provide review, management, and thorough final detail review of tax returns for individual, partnership, and corporate clients, including general advisory services (Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S).
  • When not reviewing or managing returns, perform full-service preparation of tax returns (Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S).
  • Provide tax projections, planning, and tax notices.
  • Prepare and/or review US tax returns for small business clients with a primary focus on compliance-driven work.
  • Provide tax planning support (approximately 10–15% of the time), particularly toward year-end.
  • Estate tax returns (1041), nonprofit tax returns (990), and employee benefit plan returns (5500) are nice-to-haves and can be learned on the job.

Tax Supplemental Services, Accounting & Bookkeeping Services

  • Manage professional accounting and bookkeeping services for business owners.
  • Manage financial records, transactions, entries, payments, and reporting primarily using QuickBooks.
  • Provide light oversight of bookkeeping and QuickBooks-related activities, with a primary focus on tax services rather than day-to-day bookkeeping.

Firm Support

  • Serve as a firm Tax Partner and primary point of contact for clients.
  • Manage client relationships and support staff.
  • Act as a trusted year-round advisor, providing tax compliance guidance and advisory support beyond annual tax season.
  • Streamline operations and support staff training and education.
  • Mentor and upskill junior team members by modeling high-quality technical work and client service for a growing, relatively junior team.
  • Provide leadership responsibilities to the firm, with broader strategic and leadership responsibilities developing over time.
  • Support overseas-based, client-facing leadership as the firm grows.
  • Advise business owners on tax compliance, financial records, and other matters as needed.
  • Independently track deliverables and identify additional advisory opportunities with existing clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or an advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of US tax experience.
  • Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing all required US tax return types, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S (experience across all four return types is essential).
  • Must be willing and able to prepare tax returns personally (not solely review or delegate deliverables).
  • Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Must be comfortable serving as the primary client point of contact, managing client relationships, negotiating fees, resolving service issues, and providing tax and business advisory guidance beyond tax preparation.
  • Ability to advise clients on matters such as LLC versus partnership structuring and entity location decisions.
  • Must work US Eastern-aligned hours to support client and team collaboration.
  • Technology-savvy with proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Familiarity with UltraTax and Onvio preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • Mid- to senior-level US tax professional, with preference for candidates who have significantly more than five years of experience, including those with 15–20+ years of experience.
  • Entrepreneurial, adaptable, and growth-oriented, with a desire to help shape and build the organization.
  • Long-term commitment to the firm with interest in growing into broader leadership responsibilities.
  • Nice-to-haves:
    • Experience in fund accounting, private equity, or hedge fund taxation (particularly candidates from firms specializing in these areas).
    • Big Four or large accounting firm background.
    • Experience managing client relationships while mentoring and overseeing internal team members.
