Overview
This role supports the youth sports practice of an accounting, tax, and CFO advisory firm serving insurance agencies and youth sports clubs. The youth sports clients are primarily 501(c)(3) nonprofits managed by volunteer boards (often comprised of parents of current players), with a smaller number of for-profit entities owned by a founder or head coach.
In this position, you own the tax work across nonprofit and for-profit clients, partnering closely with youth sports accountants and controllers who maintain the books.
Responsibilities
- Own the recurring tax process. Create, refine, and follow the process for ongoing tax work. Partner with the organization’s youth sports accountants and controllers to present a unified, plain-English approach to clients.
- Manage the 990 cycle. Prepare and review Forms 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N, plus Form 990-T where unrelated business income applies. Review and sign returns. Handle state charitable registrations and annual filings, and file extensions when required.
- Own the annual 1099 process. Set timelines, coordinate with the accounting team and client, prepare all forms, and meet every deadline.
- Own sales and use tax and franchise tax. Determine what is taxable by state for each club; manage registrations and exemption certificates; prepare and file sales and use tax returns and state franchise tax filings; respond to state inquiries.
- Own tax resolution. Triage and respond to federal, state, and payroll notices; research issues; respond promptly; request penalty relief where warranted. Manage payment plans, delinquent filings, and representation before the IRS and state agencies as needed. Maintain powers of attorney so clients do not need to interact with agencies alone.
- Own payroll tax items. Review 941, 940, state withholding, and unemployment filings; reconcile W-2 reporting; resolve coach classification questions before they result in notices.
- Prepare for-profit and individual returns. Prepare business returns for for-profit youth sports clubs and 1040s for club owners and executive directors.
- Provide tax planning and advisory. Meet with clients to discuss tax strategy, explain how numbers on a 990 relate to exempt status, and work with the accounting team to keep the books aligned with the strategy.
