Staff Accountant - GovCon Experience

Overview

A growing systems and software engineering company is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant with government contracting (GovCon) experience. This remote role supports core accounting operations including payroll processing, accounts payable, expense reporting, reconciliations, and financial close support. The position is open to candidates located in Alabama, Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Process payroll cycles, audit payroll reports, resolve discrepancies, and coordinate updates related to hires, terminations, and compensation changes
• Review and process vendor invoices and employee expense reports, verify approvals and coding, and reconcile vendor statements
• Assist with payroll tax reporting, documentation, and compliance tracking
• Support audit activities by compiling financial data and preparing reports
• Perform bank reconciliations and monitor cash activity for assigned accounts

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Minimum 2 years of accounting experience
• At least 2 years of experience in a government contracting finance or accounting environment
• Hands-on experience with payroll processing, accounts payable, and employee expense reports
• Strong understanding of GAAP principles
• Knowledge of compliance, documentation, and audit readiness standards
• Advanced proficiency in Excel
• Ability to manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision
• High integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial data
• Strong analytical skills to identify discrepancies and resolve issues efficiently
• Professional communication skills for coordination with internal teams and vendors

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Unanet software
• Familiarity with ADP or similar payroll systems
• Prior exposure to DCAA compliant accounting practices
• Experience supporting audits or contract financial reporting
